Blackbird Freebie

I usually try to keep my pages laser focused on cross stitch because for so many of us, this is our happy little escape from the rest of our complex and challenging world.

For that reason, I will not be making extended comments but instead will simply leave this freebie pattern here for everyone. Love to you all. Stay safe.

  8. I’m sort of new to cross stitch so I was hoping you might be able to give me a ballpark size when finished? I’m stitching on cotton evenweave fabric. Thanks in advance, I love this pattern and am hoping to give it to my dad for Father’s Day. He loves the Beatles. Very kind of you to share!

    1. You need the fabric count or how many stitches to the inch for your fabric. I use X stitch calculator—free from app store. You just type in the number of stitches by height and width, whether it is stitched with 2 threads or one, and what size border you want. I used 25 count fabric and without a border the finished pattern is approximately 61/4” x7”. Add a 2” border and it is about 8 1/4 x 9–3” border would be an inch more. Your cotton might be 18 to 28 count. If it doesn’t tell you, you can go on youtube for a demo on how to calculate it yourself.
This was my first real piece and i enjoyed making it!

    3. Hello! Yes, as Nana's Life commented, the count of your fabric will change the finishing size. Assuming that you are stitching on a 28 count fabric over 2 fibers, the stitching area will measure approximately 5.75 inches for this project. I would stitch on a piece of fabric no smaller than 10 X 10 inches.

    4. Thanks so very much y’all for taking the time to explain that to me so thoroughly! I truly appreciate it. I finished this for my dad for Father’s Day! He’s a Beatles fanatic and a retired veterinarian, who also bred birds, so it was sort of perfect. It was also one of my first real finishes. Plus, as a bonus, I had that lovely song in my head for a couple of weeks! I changed a couple of things just to add some personal whimsy to this already gorgeous design. Glad everyone else had fun too 💜

    5. Oh and I forgot to mention the finished size! Duh 🤦🏻‍♀️😂 Taking into account that I added a zigzag flower vine border to the top and bottom just inside the black border on the pattern, I stitched on 28 count- I put it in an 8” x 10” frame without any matte. So I’m grateful for the advice about what size of fabric to start with, at minimum. It was spot on
